| • Voting Question: Grad school concerns? |
|
I'm a math major planning on going to grad school for statistics, and I was wondering - what are my chances are of getting into an elite school?
My biggest concern is that my GPA isn't that great. It's only a 3.0, but I also go to one of the top liberal arts schools in the country - so the workload is tough. However, I have gotten A's in both my probability and statistics courses (because of this, I am currently the TA/grader for the advanced probability course offered at my school), and I have a B average in the courses I took for my major.
Here are field-work experiences that I have done/am currently involved in:
1) I am conducting an observational study as part of a project for my stats class. I plan on finding out what influences students at my college to start smoking and presenting the results later in the semester.
2) One summer, I worked for a professor at an ivy league university, calculating statistics for his experiments having to do with treatments for mental disorders.
3) I spent two summers collecting presidential election statistics for a renowned polling institute.
4) I taught an SAT math class over the summer. I was one of 4 students chosen to do this because I had a 780 on the math section of the SAT.
5) I am treasurer of my residence hall, so I do a lot of work with the student bank.
I haven't taken the GRE yet, but I will be doing this next month.
Thanks to anyone who can help! :)

| • Customer privacy in UK banks? |
|
I am just wondering if universities in the UK or any organisations other than the banks have any right to check students' bank transactions if the bank branches where their students opened up accounts are located within the university?
|
| • How do debit card overdrafts work? |
|
I've just opened a student bank account with halifax and have been given £2500 overdraft.
Say my account is £500 in credit and I walk in to a shop and buy something for £1000 on my debit card, will the transaction just go through no hassle or is there a chance it could be declined?

| • Have student bank loans been compromised? |

| • Student Bank Accounts UK...? |
|
I'm torn between Halifax and NatWest.
Halifax offer the largest interest-free overdraft around, up to £3000. NatWest offer a £1250 interest-free overdraft which increases a couple of hundred pound with each year. With NatWest, you get a free young person's rail card which would be very handy.
Would I actually need a £3000 over-draft?
What are your opinions?
|
| • I am starting University this month! Can you advise me of bank accounts? |
|
I need a student bank account. But problem is my credit score is not too great. Not that bad either. But i need to know if i go and apply directly to a bank, do they judge your application themselves even if you have bad score. I heard that a bank worker can still assess your situation and accept it ???
|
| • How do I set up a student bank account? |
|
What documents do I need apart from the final confirmation letter from the university? Can I go into the branch and do it myself or would I need one of my parents to come along as well?
|
| • Managing a Student Bank Account? |
|
I have opened an account through my university's credit union...is there a way my parents make a deposit into my account?
I believe that the campus bank location is the only bank they have...

| • When does a Natwest overdraft have to be paid? |
|
The overdraft facility in the Natwest's student bank account package offers £1200 overdraft.
If I called upon this facility for the first few weeks of going to university, to pay for food and travel etc until I got a job in the area. When will I have to pay the overdraft back? in 2-3weeks what ?

| • Can I have more than one Student Bank Account whilst I am at Uni? |
|
Loads of banks are offering me amazing deals for student bank acocunts whilst I'm at university. They're so good, that I want to go with more than one bank. Is it legal for me to open more than one Student Account, or do they make the offers in exchange for being your exclusive account holder?

| • What is the Best Student Bank Account for International Students? |
|
I will be leaving for study in UK, specifically Scotland - University of St Andrews in about a month. I have been researching my options regarding student bank accounts available to me. The banks at my University are as follows: Abbey, Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale, Lloyds TSB and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Interest-free overdraft is not a priority for me, though international money transfer without fee or much hassle would be much appreciated. Perks or incentives would also be great.
I have looked at each of the websites but none of them is swaying enough to help me decide on anything. Please help me.

| • Voting Question: Can i have 2 student bank accounts? |
|
I have signed up to one at halifax and just appliedo nline to hsbc and it went though. If this is wrong can i cancel the hsbc one as i presume you have to go into branch to finish it. Also my overdraft is 1250 pound interest free if i dont use it will i still be charged?
|
| • What would be YOUR ideal student bank account? |
|
A lot of students will have recently been researching what offers all the high street banks are coming up with to attract us students this year. Natwest is offering the free 5 year railcard, HBOS up to £3000 interest free overdraft & Barclays free cinema tickets. But as a student what rates and freebies would attract you most to a bank?
|
| • Student bank account help!? |
|
I've got a rubbish credit rating and I need a student bank account. I've applied to HSBC and Barclays but they both said no and will need the overdraft facility as i start uni next month.
Any suggestions? I live in England.
|
| • Voting Question: Please explain an overdraft? |
|
If I get an overdraft - my student bank allows up to £3,000 - is it kind of like a loan. So can I basically withdraw £3,000 from my bank and then my bank will have a negative balance? How long do I have to pay off this overdraft? Will any money going in to that account just offset some of the negative balance?
|
| • What should I look for in a student bank account? |
|
I will be starting uni next year, but want to do a little research into the financial side of things now.
I've looked at a few websites, including moneysupermarket.com, but some of the lingo is confusing and I'm not sure what things i'll actually need from a bank account.
If someone could help me understand what everything means, and what i'll actually need, then that would be a great help!
PS: I'm not interested in credit cards - even if they are at a really great rate, i'd rather not even have one. I Don't like them.
Yes, I am looking to open a student bank account, and I want to find out which is the best avalible in the UK, as well as understanding what all the various abreviations mean.

| • Can I have a student bank account for longer than 5 years because I started a new course? |
|
I did 2 years of a university course, quit, went back to college for a year and then started a new course at university. My bank only offers student accounts for 5 years. Last year whilst I was withdrawing my rent I mentioned to the teller that I had started a new course and would that be ok since it would mean I will end up being a student for more than 5 years, he said "yeah, I think that will be ok" Fast forward to this week, I notice from my online banking that I'm starting to be charged interest on my overdraft, I can only assume that this is because I'm over my 5 year limit.
If I go into my bank with my acceptance letter and explain (again) my situation will I be allowed to keep my account until I graduate? If not, can I open a student account with another bank?
I've googled this but I can't find anything, I can't be the only person in the world with a student account who started a new course and will be a student for longer than 5 years! Has anyone been in a similar situation?
It's only £150 I'm overdrawn so it wouldn't be a problem for me to pay it off quickly to move to another bank.
|
| • do you know of student banks accounts? |
|
i am 14, and i am starting to do a lot of babysitting, and i know this one site that will be sending my checks for online surveys, and i want to know if there are any banks, that will let me open a student bank account.

|
| • how does a student banking overdraft fee work? |
|
So i wanted to purchase something online for $112.00, and i only had 61.00 in my checking account, but the money still went through anyways...so does this mean that i will be charged the other portion of that amount of money in which i didn't have in my account which is $51.00 plus an overdraft fee, or will i just be charged the whole $112.00 + an overdraft fee? and how long do you think it will take them to send me the amount of the fee in the mail?..
i have a sovereign bank student checking account
also, how long will they give me to pay them? i have a job so it isn't a problem to me but i dont get paid next week
sorry dont get paid *till* next week
and no i do not have any other purchases trying to clear, this is the first time that i have ever done this

| • what is the best student bank account to have? |
|
in the uk?
(please don't suggest Barclays! I've had a lot of trouble with them in my first year of university and i want to change)
thanks in advance.
please explain WHY they are the best too
e.g perks, overdraft limit etc.
every website keeps giving me the wrong information and when i go into the branch to enquire about their student accounts it's not correct!

| • Good morning everyone (UK), how long have you been awake? |
|
Hi =)
I've been awake since 3am. Again. Second time this week I've had insomnia.
How's everyone doing? Awake yet? No? How about now: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B1T8xgHdMEM
Ah, that was funny, wasn't it. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UjXi6X-moxE
Wow, not that funny. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=I5ALIL7T764
Anyway, before this question gets deleted, I have a proper question: can anyone recommend me a student bank account?
I'll need one for college, but I don't know which banks offer the best accounts.
Thanks in advance xxx
This is in the wrong category. Well, partially.

|
I have been at university for a year so I have a student bank account with interest free overdraft facility. I have decided to take a break from studying so i have gone into full time work.
If i still carry on using the student bank account, could my bank do anything if they were to find out that I was no longer a student.

| • Student checking account for 16 year old? |
|
I want to open up a student bank account because i'm starting to work this summer. What banks allow checking account for students under 18? I don't want a bank where i can only put money in and not take out money.
PS. yes my dad is going to the bank with me. Thanks!!

| • How do overdrafts on Student bank accounts work? |
|
Im am confused.
For example Natwest have a student bank account that offers free arranged overdraft. £1,250 in year 1, £1,400 in year 2, £1,600 in year 3 and £1,800 in year 4.
Now does that mean the maximum I could go overdrawn over the 4 years is £1,800 without paying APR? or does it mean that I can borrow £1,250 in year 1, then another further £1,400 in year 2 and so on, totalling £6,050 that I could possibly be overdrawn at the end of my course? please help.

| • I have a lot of debt from a student bank loan! HELP! I need advice.? |
|
So I took a 12,000 student loan out from bank of america to cover my living expenses since I didnt get any money from fafsa last year (my parents were in the middle of a divorce, my dad took out all of his 401k money which made it look like we had over 200k when we didnt). it was a big mess and of course, I was the one who had to suffer for his selfishness. So I took out 12,000 to buy me a car, laptop and to cover books, tuition and living expenses. I was feeling good about it until i found out that banks are like, the worst place to get a private student loan. now I am freaking out. I need more money for next year to live on, and im worried its too late to apply for fafsa. And I am in over my head. My parents dont know anything about college and I have to figure this stuff out all on my own. I work part time but since im going into nursing its hard for me to work and get good grades in these hard classes so I can't work very much. Please give me advice. What do I do?

I'm 26 and starting Uni next year. Am I able to get a student bank account and what banks offer the best deals?
UK only.

| • 17 and lied on credit card application? |
|
I'm seventeen, and i have both a checking account and a savings account. I got my statement in the mail and it said that i could go online and get a student bank of america visa credit card. I filled it out and of course it didn't go through because i put that i was seventeen. I figured if I put that I was eighteen it wouldn't go through so I put that I was eighteen. The next screen told me that my application would be reviewed and within the next thirty days I'd get an answer. Turns out they accepted it and now I'm going to get a credit card in the mail soon. I found out that this is fraud today, so I don't know what to do. If I don't activate it can I get in trouble? If so, what do I do?
